（授業紹介）ネイティブ講師から学ぶ大学１年生の英語科目「First Year English 」（担当：ダーシー・デリント）

国際キャリア学科（ICD）の英語習得科目は定期的に実施するテストに基づき、習熟度ごとにクラスを編成しています。カリキュラムは英語力をスキル別に高め、総合的に伸ばすことを目的に編成されており、授業の多くは英語圏諸国出身のネイティブスピーカーの教員が担当しています。

英語習得科目のうち、国際キャリア学科１年生を対象とする必修科目である「First Year English」は大学英語の導入的な授業です。学生たちはレベルごとに編成された四つのクラスに分かれ、タイラー・モントゴメリー（アメリカ出身)、アラン・ウィリアムズ（ニュージーランド出身）、ダーシー・デリント（カナダ出身）、アーサー・ナカノ（アメリカ出身)の４名のネイティブ講師から将来、国際ビジネスの世界で活躍する時に活かせる通じる英語を学んでいます。授業ではペア・グループ活動、プレゼンテーションなどを通して、流暢なアウトプットができるように練習を積み、「リスニング」「スピーキング」「リーディング」「ライティング」の英語の４技能を中心に総合的なコミュニケーション力を育みます。クラスメイトとのアクティビティを通して、無理なくレベルアップすることができます。

以下は、ダーシー・デリント先生（Mr. Darcy De Lint、カナダ出身)による「First Year English」の授業紹介です。

「First Year English 」（Darcy De Lint）

First Year English is a complicated course that focuses on basic reading and writing skills but involves plenty of speaking and listening along with a travel theme.

In my course with the ICD we start with a reading circle where students read through short stories and then explore themes, vocabulary and culture items in the stories. Students have a chance to work with various classmates on their reading ability along with pronunciation and enunciation. Through short reports they can practice their writing and then presentation skills. As the stories are set overseas we also get in to the theme of travel. In the え group we are just beginning a message exchange role play where students can learn basic email etiquette while preparing to go on trip abroad. It takes them a bit of time to figure out what I have planned for the class but that introduction to difficult tasks is meant to help them in other classes in the future, so it is time well spent.

デリント先生の「 First year English ｣のクラスでは、ペアワークが多く、クラスメイトと教え合いながら学ぶことができます。教え合うことでインプットされやすく、先生とも距離が近いため、デリント先生の英語を聴くことでリスニング力も上がりました。これからもこの授業を通して英語力向上を目指していきます。
