（授業紹介）ネイティブ講師から学ぶビジネス英語「Business Reading」（担当：イアン・ケニオン）

国際キャリア学科（ICD）の英語習得科目は定期的に実施するテストに基づき、習熟度ごとにクラスを編成しています。カリキュラムは英語力をスキル別に高め、総合的に伸ばすことを目的に編成されており、授業の多くは英国、米国、カナダ、ニュージーランドなど英語圏諸国出身のネイティブスピーカーの教員が担当しています。

以下は、国際キャリア学科２年生の必修科目で、国際ビジネスにおいて必要不可欠な英文ビジネス文書の読解力、作文力の向上を目指す「Business Reading」を担当しているイアン・ケニオン先生（Mr.Ian E. Kenyon、英国出身）による授業紹介です。

「Business Reading」（Ian E. Kenyon）

In Business Reading we look at a different type of business in each class. Some examples include the Hotel Business, the Airline Business and the Retail Industry - all possible areas of employment for students in the future.

But this is not only a reading class. Students sometimes watch short videos or listen to podcasts about the businesses they are studying. Also, to incorporate the technology they are most comfortable with, students are occasionally asked to do research themselves using their smartphones. I really believe (hope!) they enjoy doing this and that they learn more from it. Finding something out for oneself is, in my opinion, very often more beneficial than being told.

Finally, as I often tell the the students, this is an English class with a business topic. Included in most classes are English exercises, such as vocabulary and comprehension tasks, related to whatever we are studying.

To conclude, this class is called Business Reading, but there is a lot more going on than just reading.

「Business Reading」では日本や海外の企業や経済に関する英語の記事や動画からキーワードを読み取ったり、関連する問題を解いたりしています。英文の読解力が身につくとともに、様々な国の経済や文化についても学べ、新しい知識をたくさん得ることができます。経済や企業経営に関する英語の語彙も増え、毎回の授業がとても楽しいです。

「Business Reading」の授業では、企業活動についての英文を読んだり、調べたりします。そのため、英語の単語や文法を学べるだけでなく、企業経営についても学ぶことができます。ペアで協力し合いながら英語を学ぶのはとても楽しいです。課題のプリントを解いた後は採点する時間もあり、間違っている箇所を見直すことができるため、毎週、英語力が向上していることを感じています。

ペアワークが多く、とても楽しくビジネス英語を学ぶことができる授業です。分からないところがある時は英語でケニオン先生に質問し、英語でヒントをいただいています。そのため、リーディングの授業ですが、英語を話す機会が多くあり、自然と英語力アップに繋がってます。

「Business Reading」は、私が最も好きな授業の一つです。ビジネス英語を学べることはもちろん、ケニオン先生は文法も細かくチェックして下さるので、とても勉強になります。授業形態としてはペアのパートナーと取り組むことが多く、先生はこまめに教室を巡回して指摘して下さるので、わからないことがあってもすぐに質問ができます。
