（授業紹介）ネイティブ講師から学ぶ大学１年生の英語科目「First Year English 」（担当：タイラー・モントゴメリー）

国際キャリア学科（ICD）の英語習得科目は定期的に実施するテストに基づき、習熟度ごとにクラスを編成しています。カリキュラムは英語力をスキル別に高め、総合的に伸ばすことを目的に編成されており、授業の多くは英語圏諸国出身のネイティブスピーカーの教員が担当しています。

英語習得科目のうち、国際キャリア学科１年生を対象とする必修科目である「First Year English」は大学英語の導入的な授業です。学生たちはレベルごとに編成された四つのクラスに分かれ、タイラー・モントゴメリー（アメリカ出身)、アラン・ウィリアムズ（ニュージーランド出身）、ダーシー・デリント（カナダ出身）、アーサー・ナカノ（アメリカ出身)の４名のネイティブ講師から将来、国際ビジネスの世界で活躍する時に活かせる通じる英語を学んでいます。授業ではペア・グループ活動、プレゼンテーションなどを通して、流暢なアウトプットができるように練習を積み、「リスニング」「スピーキング」「リーディング」「ライティング」の英語の４技能を中心に総合的なコミュニケーション力を育みます。クラスメイトとのアクティビティを通して、無理なくレベルアップすることができます。

以下は、タイラー・モントゴメリー先生（Mr. Tyler Montgomery、英語教育センター講師、アメリカ出身)による「First Year English」の授業紹介です。

Hello, my name is Tyler Montgomery. In the First-Year English ICD-い class, we focus mainly on speaking, listening, and interaction, with the goal of improving basic communication skills.

A key idea in the class is that every student is an “Active Learner,” meaning students are not passive recipients of knowledge, but rather active participants in the learning process. This includes taking part in pair and group activities, initiating conversations, and solving problems by working together. The most important aspect of being an Active Learner is understanding that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process and shows you are attempting to step out of your comfort zone.

Every class we start with a short warm-up conversation about everyday topics such as weekend plans, hobbies, part-time jobs, the weather, and so on. These are open-ended conversations that students can complete in their own way. Next, we review homework and finally move on to the day’s lesson. Textbook work is supplemented by additional activities and conversation games.

Since the end of pandemic prevention measures this spring, group and pair work has been conducted in a much more natural way, which has increased student talk-time and improved communication between students.

It is my hope that First-Year English students are able to improve their English communication skills in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
