皆さんは「英語」と聞くと、どこの国を思い浮かべますか。イギリスやアメリカを思い浮かべる人が多いかもしれません。日本の大学にもかつては「英米語学科」や「英米文学科」といった名称の学科が数多くありました。これらの名称は、主にイギリスやアメリカの言語や文学、文化などを学ぶという当時の英語教育の考え方を反映したものです。
When you hear the word English, which country comes to mind? Many people immediately think of the United Kingdom or the United States. In Japan, many universities traditionally had departments with names such as English or English and American Literature. These names reflected the way English was commonly viewed at the time—as a subject centred on the language, literature and culture of Britain and the United States.
英語は、もともと現在のイギリス、特にイングランドで発達した言語ですが、長い歴史の中で世界へ広がり、現在では国際社会で広く使われる共通語へと発展しました。今日では、第二言語や外国語として英語を学ぶ人を含めると、およそ15億人が英語を使用していると言われています。つまり、英語は母語話者だけの言語ではなく、世界中の人々が互いにコミュニケーションをとるための共通語として、他のどの言語よりも広く使われているのです。
The English language originally developed in what is now England before gradually spreading throughout the world over many centuries. Today, it has evolved into a language used for international communication. It is estimated that around 1.5 billion people use English, including those who speak it as a second or foreign language. In other words, English is no longer simply the language of its native speakers; it has become the world's most widely used means of communication between people from different linguistic backgrounds.
本学でも、このような英語を取り巻く環境を踏まえ、国際キャリア学部国際英語学科の英語名を Department of English as a Global Language (略: EAGL) としています。つまり、「世界共通語としての英語」を学ぶ学科です。
Recognising this changing role of English, our Department is officially known as the Department of English as a Global Language (EAGL for short). The name reflects our educational philosophy: we study English not only as the language of particular countries, but as the world's common language.
実際に、日本の大学を卒業した学生が、日本で働きながら英語を使う場面を考えてみましょう。その相手は、イギリス人やアメリカ人とは限りません。韓国、中国、ベトナムをはじめとするアジア諸国の人々や、ヨーロッパ、南米、アフリカなど、さまざまな国や地域の人々と英語でコミュニケーションをとる機会も少なくありません。
Now imagine yourself working in Japan after graduation and using English in your career. The people you communicate with may not necessarily be from Britain or the United States. Instead, you are just as likely to work with people from neighbouring Asian countries such as South Korea, China and Vietnam, as well as people from Europe, South America, Africa and many other parts of the world.
では、そのような社会で求められる英語力とは何でしょうか。その一つは、さまざまな国や地域の人々が話す英語に耳を傾け、それぞれの違いを理解しながら、相手に伝わるように自分の考えを発信する力です。アメリカ英語やイギリス英語だけを理解できれば十分というわけではありません。
So, what kind of English skills are needed in today's global society? One important ability is to understand the different varieties of English spoken around the world while communicating your own ideas clearly and effectively. It is no longer enough simply to understand British or American English.
だからこそ、本学科では英語を「世界共通語（Global Language）」という視点から学びます。発音や文法、語彙といった基礎をしっかり身につけることはもちろん、多様な英語に触れ、異なる文化や価値観を理解しながら、世界中の人々と円滑にコミュニケーションできる力を育てることを目指しています。
That is why our Department approaches English from the perspective of a Global Language. Alongside developing a solid foundation in pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, our students learn to appreciate the diversity of English and the cultures of its speakers. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge, confidence and communication skills they need to engage successfully with people from around the world.
