【卒業生特別講義】ANA WINGS, A.N.さん / Fresher's Seminar I クラス

On Wednesday, June 24, Ms. A.N. from ANA WINGS CO., LTD. came to speaker to the Freshers. She is an EAGL graduate (March 2024) and is now working for ANA WINGS CO., LTD. as a cabin attendant.

Ms. N. started her talk with an introduction of her work duties and a reminder to students of the importance of safety in her job. This is very true, as many of us may have an image of a cabin attendant serving customers food and making sure that they have an enjoyable flight, but safety and being prepared for all eventualities also play an important role. Students were able to watch a short video introducing the type of safety training that cabin attendants must undergo. Ms. N. also mentioned the role of cabin attendants in marketing research. The students found all this very interesting and many were surprised at the different roles that the cabin attendant must undertake.

The work schedule was also very interesting for the students. Ms. N. shared her typical week with the students, and it was interesting to hear that the day started with a briefing and finished with a de-briefing. Of course, these briefings are so important to discuss the flight and ensure a smooth experience for everyone. Here, she emphasized the importance of providing top-notch customer service and that these meetings were an essential part of her day. Students also got a sense of the work week that a cabin attendant has - the fact that you may have to stay over at several different airports during the week was mentioned. Cabin attendants must also pack a suitcase so that they are prepared for any eventuality. The role of ANA in the local area was also something that students found surprising and Ms. N. shared some pictures of her actively contributing to the local community, such as, the Fukuoka Prefectural Government’s Children’s Summer Event.

Ms. N. reflected on her time at EAGL and spoke about how her studies had opened the path to becoming a flight attendant. During her time at EAGL, She spent time on obtaining different qualifications (TOEIC, English for Young Learners, participating in internships, Sign Language, Red Cross Basic Life Supporter) which helped in the application and interview process. There are many cabin attendants who also have varied experiences and skills. It is possible for students to obtain many different qualifications at university, and she encouraged students to try and get as many of these qualifications as possible. She also spoke of the importance of challenging oneself and gave a great example of when she volunteered as a group representative for the international exchange day-camp and how she worked with others to ensure it was a success. She spoke about trying hard at improving her English skills and of the help that EAGL teachers gave her. One interesting point was that she read newspaper articles – these articles helped her to gain an understanding of many different topics, from economics, politics and of course, societal problems – she recommended that students also try this.

Finally, Ms. N. also shared some of her personal dream to become a cabin attendant. In elementary school, she had written that she wanted to become a cabin attendant and she had also written the same dream for senior high school. And, of course, she was able to study at EAGL and make her own dream come true! 

I decided to obtain various qualifications while I was in university. I felt that the training that flight attendants receive after joining the company is very important.The guest speaker felt that she was able to become a flight attendant because she worked hard throughout her four years of university. I, too, want to work hard throughout my four years of university so that I can get a job at my dream workplace. (M.E. san)

Before the lecture,I thought being a cabin attendant was a glamorous job. However,I learned that they have many important responsibilities,such as dealing with emergencies and keeping passengers safe. The most impressive part of the lecture was the story about how cabin attendants respond during emergencies. The cabin attendant who gave the lecture spoke in a very strict voice. When she said,”Please follow the safety instructions,” I could really feel how serious an emergency situation is. This changed my impression of the job. I learned that cabin attendants sometimes need to be strict to protect passengers’lives. I also realized that communication skills and kindness are very important. (K.O.san) 

Nさんの話を聞いて、華やかなイメージを持っていましたが、想像以上に大変な仕事であることを知りました。CA のお仕事は接客サービスだけでなく、安全運航のために訓練を受けていて、人の命を預かって飛ぶ仕事なので安全面を第一に考え、私たちの身を守ってくださっているのだと思いました。普段あまり関わることのない話が聞けてとてもよかったです。大変な仕事ですが、いろんな人と関わることができ、やりがいのある仕事だと感じました。言葉遣いの難しさは社会人になっても感じるとおっしゃっていて、大学生の時から意識しておいたほうが良いとアドバスを頂いたのでこれから意識していこうと思います。また、資格をたくさん取得しておられ、私も一年生のうちからいろんなことにチャレンジしていきたいなと思いました。(S.I.san)

I hadn’t planned on becoming a flight attendant, but after hearing her story, I became interested in the job. I’m currently researching what it takes to become a flight attendant. I also learned about what I should do while I’m still in school and how to study effectively, so I’d like to put that into practice. It was a really great opportunity. (M.T.san)
