今回は国際英語学科の専門選択科目である「Theories and Methods」を紹介します。授業を担当するのは細川教授です。この科目は「全て英語で授業を行う」のが特徴です。講義もテキストもディスカッションも全て英語です。「全て英語で理解できるのですか？」「それができるのです」
This time, we would like to introduce "Theories and Methods", one of the elective courses offered by the Department of English as a Global Language. The course is taught by Professor Hosokawa. What makes this course unique is that everything is conducted in English. The lectures, the textbook, and even the class discussions are all in English.
Q: "Can students really understand everything in English?" A: "The answer is yes—they can."
英語教育の歴史を振り返ると、これまでに多くの教授法が提案されてきました。その当時の言語学や心理学の研究の影響を受けて提案されたものです。1970年代からは、コミュニケーション力を育成する指導法が主流となりましたが、それ以前は今とは全く異なる指導法が使われていました。つまり、指導法は時代によって変わるのです。そうした内容を分かりやすく英語で説明し、受講生に質問をしながら意見を発表してもらい、理解を深めます。
Throughout the history of English language teaching, a wide variety of teaching methods have been developed. Each method was influenced by the linguistic and psychological theories of its time. Since the 1970s, approaches that emphasize the development of communicative competence have become the mainstream. Before then, however, English was taught in ways that were very different from those used today. In other words, teaching methods change over time. In this course, these developments are explained clearly in English. Students are encouraged to think about the ideas, respond to questions, and share their opinions in English, helping them deepen their understanding through active participation.
学期の最初は講義を静かに聴くだけだった学生達が、次第に自分の意見を英語で発表するようになります。そして、その意見をもとにクラスでさらに深掘りしていくのです。間違った英語でも構いません。流暢に意見を伝えられなくても構いません。この授業自体がまさにコミュニカティブな授業なのです。こうしたコミュニケーションを通して、学生達は専門知識と英語力を習得していきます。
At the beginning of the semester, many students simply listen quietly to the lectures. As the weeks go by, however, they gradually begin to express their own ideas in English. Their comments then become the starting point for deeper class discussions. It does not matter if their English is not perfect. It does not matter if they cannot express their ideas fluently. This course is, in itself, a truly communicative learning environment. Through this process of communicating, discussing, and exchanging ideas, students develop both their professional knowledge of English language teaching and their English proficiency.
英語を勉強するのはエキサイティングです。自由な発想を身につけると勉強の仕方も変わります。まさに、「英語学習は深い！」と言えるでしょう。
Studying English is an exciting journey. As you learn to think more freely and openly, the way you learn English also begins to change. That is why we can truly say, "The more you study English, the deeper and more fascinating it becomes."
