【授業紹介】Junior Seminar I:柴田教授

伝わる発音を身につけ、自己発信力につなげる実践授業(Developing clear pronunciation and confident spoken communication)

“It’s enough to master the vowels and consonants, and your English pronunciation will be fine.” Many people believe this. Learning how to produce individual sounds accurately is certainly an important first step. However, natural speech is much more than simply pronouncing dictionary words one after another.

Junior Seminar I, a compulsory third-year course in the Department of English as a Global Language, introduces students to the theory and practice of phonetics with the aim of helping them develop clear and effective spoken English. The course is taught by Professor Yusuke Shibata, whose area of expertise is English phonetics.

授業では、個々の母音や子音はもちろん、実際の会話で起こる音のつながりや変化(connected speech)も扱います。例えば、ネイティブスピーカーは just in time の just in を隙間なくつなげて発音するため、人名の Justin と同じように聞こえます。同様にmark us は Marcus のように聞こえます。

また worst case の /t/ は発音されないことが多いため worse caseとさほど変わらないように聞こえることがあります。また、his, himや her などの h が弱くなったり消えたりすることもあるため、I'll send her home. が、I'll send a home. のように聞こえるかも知れません。

2つの音が別の1つの音に変化することもあります。例えば /d/ で終わる語と /j/ で始る語が続くと /ʤ/ のような音になることがあります。つまりpaid your bill は pager bill のような音に聞こえることがあります。

In class, students explore not only individual vowels and consonants, but also the ways sounds interact in real conversation. These features of connected speech are one reason why native speakers sometimes seem to speak “too fast”, even when the vocabulary itself is relatively simple.

For example, native speakers usually pronounce the words "just in" in "just in time" so smoothly that they sound almost identical to the name Justin. Likewise, "mark us" may sound remarkably similar to "Marcus".

Sounds may also disappear altogether. The /t/ in "worst case", for instance, is often omitted, making it sound very much like "worse case". In addition, /h/ in words such as "his", "him", and "her" may become weak or disappear completely. As a result, "I'll send her home" may sound like "I'll send a home".

Sometimes two neighbouring sounds even combine to create an entirely new sound. For example, when a word ending in /d/ is followed by a word beginning with /j/, the two sounds may merge into something similar to /ʤ/. Consequently, "paid your bill" may sound close to "pager bill".

Without an understanding of these changes, it is easy to feel that native speakers talk too quickly to follow. Once students begin to understand how English sounds work, however, they often discover that speech which once seemed impossible to catch gradually becomes easier to understand. Better pronunciation, in other words, leads naturally to better listening.

Of course, effective communication involves far more than pronunciation alone. Stress, rhythm, intonation, pausing, vocabulary, and logical organisation all contribute to making spoken English easier to understand. For this reason, Junior Seminar I goes beyond phonetics. Having developed a foundation in English sounds, students move on to short speeches and presentations, gradually learning how to express their own ideas clearly and confidently.

Ultimately, the goal of Junior Seminar I is to help students find their own voice in English. Whether they are hoping to study abroad, pursue an international career, or simply speak and understand English more naturally, students will find many opportunities for discovery and growth throughout the course.
