In this column, I would like to think about the meaning of the word “priceless” and what life at university can offer. Many students may feel this way as they study for entrance exams: “I want to go to university, but what should I do after I get in? I don’t have a clear idea about my future career after graduation.”
You’re not alone if you feel uncertain. Looking at the current situation in Japan and around the world, it’s hard to say with complete confidence, “Everything will be fine.”
However, the photo above shows two graduates standing with Professor Nugent. One of them is working at a world-class hotel in the United Kingdom, and the other is employed by one of Japan’s leading airlines. Their paths did not appear overnight.
Your future career takes shape during the four years you spend at university.
□ Priceless その言葉の意味は?
さて英語の勉強です。「less」という語はどういう意味でしょうか。代表的な意味は2つあります。①形容詞・副詞として「より少ない」という意味です。たとえば、If you want to lose weight, eat less meat.
Now, let’s turn to English study. What does the word “less” mean? It has two main uses.
First, as an adjective or adverb, it means “a smaller amount.” For example: "If you want to lose weight, eat less meat." This simply means you should limit how much meat you eat.
Second, “less” can also work as a suffix. In words like homeless (having no home) or motherless (having no mother), it means “without” or “not having.”
So then, what does “priceless” mean? It does not mean “having no value.” Rather, it means “so valuable that no price can be placed on it.”
Learning at university is different from learning in high school. Up to high school, students tend to focus on facts and spend a lot of time memorizing information. At university, however, you spend much more time exploring “why.”
- Why is the international situation so unstable?
- Why is English used around the world?
You think deeply about questions like these. Sometimes there are clear answers, and sometimes there are none. In fact, once you enter society, you will find that many important questions have no single correct answer. That is why developing the ability to think is so important.
In the Department of English as a Global Language, communication between teachers and students is very active. There are many opportunities to think together and exchange ideas. In addition, through our study abroad programs, students are given chances to experience different cultures firsthand.
As you think freely and encounter other cultures, you will naturally begin to discover what you truly want to do. When that happens, your four years at university will truly be PRICELESS. The key to making your life meaningful is already in your hands.
