In this column, I would like to talk about English conversation skills. We could also call this “communication skills,” but the main question here is simple: how can we speak English fluently? When we see someone speaking English with great ease and confidence, we often think, “I wish I could speak like that.” Don’t you feel the same way? Is there any effective method to achieve that level of fluency?
Building a Solid Foundation in English
This may sound obvious, but the first step is to build a solid foundation in English. It is important to develop vocabulary and grammar skills, as well as the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. When you hear this, some of you may think, “Well, of course—I already know that.”
But here is the real question: if you build a strong foundation in English, will you automatically be able to speak English fluently?
When we say “speaking English fluently,” do we mean that English comes out nonstop, without pauses? That may be part of it. However, you have probably met people who speak English without stopping, yet it is hard to understand what they are trying to say. Speaking fluently and speaking well are not the same thing. If possible, we would all like to speak English well, not just fluently.
Training in Japanese
Most of the people reading this column are probably native speakers of Japanese. If that is the case, you can actually practice in Japanese. You may be thinking, “In Japanese, without using English? Can that really help me speak English better?” The answer is yes—it can.
Do you have someone around you who is very good at speaking? People who speak well know how to organize their thoughts. In other words, they know how to speak in a way that is easy for listeners to understand. To put it more clearly, if you cannot speak well in Japanese, you will not be able to speak well in English either.
When we think about learning English, we tend to focus only on English itself. However, the foundation is actually Japanese ability. When you were a child, didn’t you talk to your parents about what happened to you during the day? This was excellent practice for conversation. As we grow older, though, we gradually stop doing this. One simple practice method is to talk to yourself in Japanese about what happened that day before going to bed. If you continue this practice, you will begin to understand how to organize and express your thoughts. Try studying English while doing this kind of training. You will find that your English speaking skills also improve. What do you think?
In the Department of English as a Global Language, we introduce many different ways of learning English. “I didn’t know there was a way to study like this!”—discoveries like this make learning English even more enjoyable. Don’t overthink it. Relax and enjoy the process.
