The Joy of Discovery

In this column, I would like to talk about how novels begin. When you read a novel, have you ever stopped to think about how the story starts? Probably not—most people do not pay much attention to that. However, there are some interesting patterns hidden in the beginnings of novels.

When we greet someone we do not know, we usually tell them our name. This is because a name represents who we are. In this respect, the beginning of a novel is quite similar. Because the opening is so important, authors probably devote their full effort to it. In fact, in many novels, the protagonist’s name or the main characters are introduced in the very first sentence. Please look at the following examples.

This is not limited to Japanese novels. We can find similar patterns in English novels as well.

  • My name is Kathy, H. I'm thirty-one years old, ... Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro
  • Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister ... Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll
  • When Mr Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced ... The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien

There are many more examples, but let us stop here for now. Do you not find it interesting to read novels from this kind of perspective?

What Is the Use of This?

Some people may find discoveries like these simply “interesting,” while others may wonder, “How will this be useful when I enter society?” Since university is a period of preparation for life after graduation, it is certainly a place to acquire practical skills and qualifications that will be useful in the workplace. However, I believe that discoveries of this kind are also extremely important for living a meaningful life.

In the past, society was centered on manufacturing. In such an era, it was more important to process the task at hand quickly and accurately than to think deeply about many different things. Today, however, we live in an age dominated by the service industry. In this era, the ability to think for oneself is essential. In a rapidly changing society, the capacity to make appropriate judgments on one’s own, in response to a wide range of situations, is indispensable.

At university, students develop practical skills. Yet that alone is not enough. Discoveries can be found in unexpected places, and those who notice them are the ones who will live resiliently in the society of tomorrow. In the Department of English as a Global Language, we cultivate students’ thinking skills through systematic training in critical and reflective thinking. Why not take on this challenge yourself? I am confident that exciting discoveries await you.
