今回のコラムでは、英語のリーディング力育成についてお話します。英語を長く勉強していても、読むのが苦手という人は多いのではないでしょうか。最近は、大学共通テストや各種検定試験(TOEIC, TOEFLなど)のリーディング問題が長文のスピードテストになっています。英語力をつけるには、文章をいかに速く正確に読み取るかが鍵になります。
In this column, I would like to discuss how to develop English reading skills. Even students who have studied English for many years often feel that reading is difficult. In recent years, reading sections in the Common Test for University Admissions and in various proficiency tests (such as TOEIC and TOEFL) have effectively become speed tests that require reading long passages quickly. To improve English ability, the key lies in how fast and accurately one can understand written texts.
□ なぜ速く読めない? Why Is It So Hard to Read Quickly?
When you see a long English passage, do you feel intimidated? When students begin preparing for proficiency tests, I often hear comments such as, “What? We have to read this much English in just 80 minutes?” This is not true only of proficiency tests. The Common Test for University Admissions is the same.
So, why is it difficult to read quickly? The first reason is vocabulary. Without sufficient vocabulary knowledge, it is impossible to read English smoothly. If you repeatedly stop after reading a short part and then start again, you will soon forget what you have already read. Humans rely on what is called working memory, which temporarily stores information. When you lack vocabulary and keep stopping while reading, you cannot use this working memory effectively for comprehension. This is the first reason.
The second reason is that many learners have never been trained to read quickly. This is not the same as so-called “speed-reading techniques,” which claim to allow people to understand an entire page at a glance. Such techniques require special abilities and are not realistic for most people. As I mentioned in the column on listening, native English speakers speak at a speed of about 180 words per minute. When it comes to reading, however, they are even faster, and it is said that they read at a speed of 200 to 300 words per minute. Of course, reading speed varies from person to person. Have you ever measured your own reading speed? If you read fewer than 100 words per minute, it will be very difficult to cope with proficiency tests.
□ どんな勉強が有効? What Kind of Study Is Effective?
The ability to read quickly can be developed through practice. As with improving listening skills, shadowing practice is highly effective. Some reading materials come with audio recordings. Alternatively, you can use longer listening materials. Choose materials that are read at a speed of about 180 words per minute and continue practicing reading aloud along with the audio. What is important at this stage is that you understand the meaning of the English text you are reading. Reading aloud materials you do not understand is not effective.
So, why is shadowing such an effective practice method? People walk at different speeds—some walk quickly, while others walk more slowly. In the same way, each of you has your own reading speed. Shadowing is an effective training method that helps adjust and improve your reading speed. It increases your information-processing speed, which in turn leads to faster reading. Simply telling yourself, “I should read faster,” does not work. Just like in sports, practice is essential.
Another important point is not to use materials that are too difficult. If you continue shadowing (reading aloud) with relatively easy materials for several months, you will begin to see clear results.
There is always a reason why something feels difficult. The Department of English as a Global Language provides education that turns “I can’t” into “I can.” Before concluding that you lack ability, why not study with us? I am confident that your English ability will improve.
