Graduate School Studies

In this column, I would like to talk about students who choose to go on to graduate school after studying in the Department of English as a Global Language. For high school students who are currently working hard to enter university, not many are probably planning at this stage to continue on to graduate school in the future. However, graduate school is also one possible option.

This year, three students will go on to graduate school. Two of them will advance to the Graduate School of Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University. The first student spent two years in her seminar studying non-verbal communication, with a particular focus on body language. Finding this research fascinating, she plans to study communication studies in greater depth at graduate school.

The second student decided to pursue graduate studies in order to further explore applied cognitive linguistics, which she also researched in her seminar. You may not be familiar with the term “applied cognitive linguistics,” but the language we use reflects how humans perceive and understand the world. In other words, this field examines how people view the world and how those perceptions are expressed through language. Such research is extremely useful for those who plan to teach English in the future. Although she has already achieved EIKEN Grade 1 and scored over 900 on the TOEIC—qualifications that would allow her to enter the teaching profession immediately—she has chosen to go on to graduate school because of her strong desire to focus on research first.

The third student developed an interest in phonetics from the time she entered university and has studied speech sounds for four years. She aims to enter a graduate school overseas and has already received offers of admission from graduate programs at the University of London and the University of Leeds. These are among the top graduate schools in the United Kingdom, and high expectations are placed on her future research.

In addition, some students often proceed to professional graduate schools of education, such as the Graduate School of University of Teacher Education Fukuoka. These students wish to acquire specialized knowledge before becoming English teachers at junior or senior high schools.

While nearly 90 percent of students in the Department of English as a Global Language go on to careers in fields such as aviation, finance, and the hotel industry, about 10 percent become English teachers or advance to graduate school. These students did not necessarily plan to attend graduate school when they first entered the university. Rather, through their studies at university, they developed a strong interest in research and chose graduate school as their future path. Our department offers a wide range of options, and I encourage you to make full use of these possibilities.
