In this column, I would like to consider how to improve English listening skills. Listening questions are included in various English proficiency tests as well as in the Common Test for University Admissions. I often hear comments such as, “I can’t get good scores in listening,” or questions like, “How can I improve my listening ability?” In response, I would like to share my own advice on this topic.
Why English Is Hard to Understand
In Japan, English is not spoken on a daily basis, nor are English-language programs constantly broadcast on television. As a result, unless learners make a conscious effort to create opportunities to listen to English, they have very little exposure to spoken English. I often hear people say that they watch foreign movies or listen to English music in order to become familiar with English sounds. However, I do not think this is very helpful when it comes to answering listening questions on tests. This is because test listening tasks mainly consist of monologues and conversations spoken at a fixed speed, and they require listeners to understand the content accurately. In contrast, the English used in movies varies greatly depending on the speaker: responses may be very short, pauses can be long, and speaking speed differs from person to person. For this reason, movie English is a different type of English from that used in listening tests.
Effective Ways to Improve Listening Skills
So, how can you improve your English listening skills? There are two effective approaches. The first is to build your vocabulary. If you do not understand key words, your thinking stops, and you can no longer keep up with the spoken English. The second is to improve your information-processing ability. Because listening involves sound, if you cannot understand it instantly, the sound is gone. In other words, you need the ability to grasp meaning immediately as the sound reaches your ears. One very effective way to develop this ability is shadowing.
Shadowing is an activity in which you listen to English and read it aloud immediately after the speaker. When used effectively, shadowing can significantly improve listening skills in a relatively short period of time. The basic steps are as follows.
(1) Prepare listening materials that come with a script. Ideally, the speed should be about 180 words per minute. This is the speed at which overseas newsreaders deliver the news, and many proficiency tests use this speed.
(2) Read the script and check the meaning. Look up any unfamiliar words and learn them.
(3) Start shadowing practice. It is important to follow the audio while thinking about the meaning.
Shadowing takes some time to get used to. Because you read aloud, you may feel strain in muscles that are not usually used in Japanese, and you may find it difficult to produce proper intonation. However, if you practice for just 15 minutes a day and continue for several months, you will begin to understand the meaning simply by listening to English. In this sense, learning English is just like sports: daily practice is essential.
In the Department of English as a Global Language, we also teach this kind of training. Many students say that although they could not understand English at first, their listening scores on proficiency tests improved dramatically in a short time. To learn English effectively, it is important to know which skills you want to develop and what kind of training works best for that purpose, based on sound, scientific knowledge. What did you think?
