【英語学習コラム】No.7: 「なんとなく」を大切に Valuing "Nantonaku" A Vague Feeling

英語学習コラム第7回のテーマは「なんとなく」です。これは日本人がよく使うことばですね。A:「どうして英語を勉強したいの?」B:「なんとなく」。こんなやりとりは一般的ではないでしょうか。

The theme of this column is “nantonaku,” which roughly means “for no particular reason” or “just somehow.” This is a phrase Japanese people use quite often. For example:

A: “Why do you want to study English?”
B: “Nantonaku.”

Isn’t this kind of exchange quite common?

□ なんとなく "Nantonaku"

The word “nantonaku” is often used when we cannot clearly explain something, but this does not mean it is a negative expression. However, in schools and in society, people tend to expect not “nantonaku,” but rather specificity and clarity. For example, the phrase “searching for oneself” was popular some time ago. Schools also seem to provide opportunities for students to think about their future goals and careers. When you go to a bookstore, you find countless books about ways of thinking, decision-making, and other skills for success, and the sheer number of them can feel overwhelming.

Certainly, having clear goals and working steadily and purposefully toward achieving them is admirable. That said, many success stories in society appear to include a great deal of retrospective justification—stories added after success has already been achieved to make one’s path seem reasonable and inevitable. Life is not a straight line; it is a series of twists and turns. Luck also plays a role. Therefore, when people speak as if they have moved straight ahead without deviation, it can feel somewhat unnatural. In reality, the ability to survive and adapt no matter how life unfolds—what we call resilience—may be far more important.

□ なんとなくという選択肢もあり "Nantonaku" Is Also a Valid Choice

I majored in English literature at university. After that, I studied applied linguistics and eventually came to teach at a university. However, I did not study English literature with a clear future goal in mind. I simply liked the works of Natsume Sōseki, and since Sōseki had been an English teacher before becoming a novelist, I chose to study English literature. In that sense, you could say that I decided my academic path because I “somehow” wanted to study English.

At university, I now teach English education, but I still continue to read books in English literature and Japanese literature on my own. That said, when I first entered university and began reading novels by Dickens, one of Britain’s most representative writers, and poetry by Wordsworth, I was keenly aware of how limited my English ability was, and I felt discouraged. My university years were filled with frustration. Even so, as I kept reading, I gradually became able to understand the novels. I believe there were two reasons for this. One was that it was something I genuinely liked. The other was that I was fortunate to meet excellent teachers at university. The university where I studied provided an outstanding environment for learning English literature.

I view the feeling of “nantonaku” in a positive light. It suggests that there is something within you that cannot yet be fully explained in words, and it certainly does not mean that you are thinking about nothing. However, one thing you must be careful about is the environment of the university you choose. Even if your decision is based on “nantonaku,” placing yourself in an environment where you cannot pursue what you truly want to do is not advisable.

If any of you feel that you “somehow want to study English,” why not study in the Department of English as a Global Language? University study is different from what you experienced in high school. You will engage in practical learning and research aimed at using English effectively in professional and social contexts. Through this process, I believe you will gradually clarify what you want to do in the future and why you wanted to study English in the first place. Please do not give up on your dreams.
