英語学習コラムの6回目は、教職について考えます。皆さんは将来学校の先生になりたいと考えたことはありますか？おそらく少ないのではないかと思います。教師になるためには、大学で「教職課程」というコースを履修する必要があります。今回はその内容についてお話します。
In the sixth installment of this English learning column, I would like to focus on the teaching profession. Have you ever thought about becoming a school teacher in the future? Probably not many of you have. To become a teacher, students must take a set of courses at university known as a “teacher training program.” In this column, I would like to explain what this program involves.
□ 教職課程 Teacher Training Program
大学を卒業する為には124単位を取得する必要があります。1科目が2単位と考えてください。教職課程はそれに加えてさらに教育関係の科目を履修します。国際英語学科では、中学校・高等学校の一種免許（英語）を取得することができます。その上で、公立学校に就職する場合は、4年次に教員採用試験を受験します。
教職課程を履修する学生は、全体の2割程度です。そして、実際に採用試験を受けて教師になるのは全体の1割程度と考えてください。他の学生は航空関係を始めとして多様な職業に就きます。教師になるのは難しいのですが、ここ最近は採用試験受験者のほぼ全員が合格しています。合格するためには、高い英語力、実践的な指導力、そして、教育法規の理解が必要です。
多くの学生は教職課程を履修しながら、次第に「教えることの魅力」を体験します。最初は「とりあえず教職を履修しておこう」という気持ちですが、教授法や模擬授業を通してその魅力に気づき、教育実習で実際に教えてみて、将来の方向が決まるようです。「学校はブラックだ」とよく言われますが、教えることは素晴らしい職業ですし、女性が生涯にわたって働き続けることができる貴重な分野でもあります。
To graduate from university, students are required to earn 124 credits. You may think of one course as being worth 2 credits. In addition to these requirements, students in the teacher training program must take extra courses related to education. In the Department of English as a Global Language, students can obtain a Class I teaching license for junior high school and senior high school (English). Those who wish to work at public schools must also take the teacher employment examination in their fourth year.
About 20 percent of students enroll in the teacher training program. Roughly 10 percent actually take the employment examination and become teachers. The remaining students go on to a wide range of careers, including positions in the aviation industry. Becoming a teacher is challenging; however, in recent years, almost all students who take the employment examination have passed. To succeed, candidates need a high level of English proficiency, practical teaching skills, and a solid understanding of educational laws and regulations.
Many students gradually experience the appeal of teaching while completing the teacher training program. At first, they often think, “I’ll take the program for now,” but through courses in teaching methodology and mock lessons, they begin to recognize its attractiveness. By actually teaching during their teaching practicum, they are able to clarify their future career direction. Schools are often described as demanding workplaces, but teaching is a rewarding profession and also a valuable field in which women, in particular, can continue working throughout their lives.
□ 教職はアート Teaching as an Art
私は教職課程の中でも指導法を担当しています。国際英語学科は、他の大学と比較しても素晴らしい特徴があります。それは、できるだけ日本語を使わずに「英語をコミュニカティブに教える」ことができる実践力を習得することができるからです。これは大変難しい技術です。ただ、模擬授業を通して1人ひとりに具体的な指導をしていきます。
全ての模擬授業はビデオ撮影し、学生が自分の目で確認することができます。また、指導案はきめ細かくアドバイスします。こうした練習を通して、英語で質問する力やタスクを使って文法を教える技術を身につけていきます。こうした積み重ねのなかで、「教えることはアートだ」と実感します。教育はアート。だからこそ、腕を磨くことに終わりはありません。多くの卒業生が現場で活躍しているのは、大学でこうした実戦訓練を体験しているからだと思います。皆さん、Teaching is an Art という視点で学んでみませんか。きっと素晴らしい教師になれると確信しています。
Within the teacher training program, I am responsible for courses in teaching methodology. The Department of English as a Global Language has an outstanding feature, even when compared with other universities: students can develop the practical ability to teach English communicatively while minimizing the use of Japanese. This is a highly demanding skill. However, through mock lessons, I provide detailed and individualized guidance to each student.
All mock lessons are recorded on video so that students can review their own teaching with their own eyes. In addition, I give careful, detailed advice on lesson plans. Through this kind of practice, students acquire the ability to ask questions in English and the skills needed to teach grammar through the use of tasks. As these experiences accumulate, students come to realize that “teaching is an art.” Education is art, and for that very reason, there is no end to refining one’s skills. I believe that many of our graduates are successful teachers because they experienced this kind of practical training at university. Why not study with the perspective that Teaching is an Art? I am confident that you can become an excellent teacher.
