Happy New Year! 2026年が始まりました。皆さんは年末年始をどのように過ごされましたか？英語学習コラムの3回目は「雑音を気にしていませんか？」というテーマで考えてみます。受験シーズンの到来で休む時間がないかもしれませんが、気分転換にコーヒーでも飲みながら読んで頂けると嬉しいです。
さて、「雑音」ですが、ここでは巷で言われている気になる風説を指しています：①「英語を勉強するのもいいけど、この国際情勢じゃ勉強できないでしょう」、②「生成AIの時代に英語を勉強する意味があるの？」。どちらも何となく説得力がありますよね。こう言われてしまうと英語を学ぼうとする気持ちが揺らぎませんか？今回はこの2つの問題を考えます。
Happy New Year! The year 2026 has begun. How did you spend the New Year holidays? This is the third installment of our English learning column, and this time the theme is “Are You Letting the Noise Distract You?”
The entrance exam season has arrived, so you may feel that you have little time to rest. Still, I would be happy if you could read this column while taking a short break—perhaps with a cup of coffee.
Now, what do I mean by “noise”? Here, it refers to the opinions and rumors we often hear around us, such as:
(1) “Studying English is fine, but with the current international situation, isn’t it difficult to really learn it?”
(2) “In the age of generative AI, is there any point in studying English?”
Both of these sound somewhat convincing, don’t they? When you hear comments like these, don’t they make you hesitate about studying English? In this column, I would like to think about these two questions together.
□ 複雑な国際情勢 A Complex Global Situation
国際情勢に目を転じると、沈静化するどころか、ますます複雑になっています。信じられないような出来事が毎日のように起こり、それが別の地域に飛び火しているようです。これでは世界に飛び出す勇気が揺らぎますね。英語を勉強する多くの人が、安全・安心・優しい国際交流を期待しています。素敵なホストファミリーのもとで異文化を満喫して英語を学びたい！確かにこれができれば理想ですね。でも、「国際情勢が不安定になる要因は何だろう？なぜ紛争が起こっているのだろう？どういう価値観がぶつかり合っているのだろう？」、このような疑問が生まれませんか？世界は異なる価値観で成り立っています。それを勉強するには、世界語である英語を理解することが大切です。なぜなら多くの国が英語で情報発信をしているからです。英語が使えるということは、世界を理解し、将来を予測する力をつけることを意味するのです。つまり、国際情勢が複雑だからこそ英語を学んで「生きる力」を身につけることが大切なのです。問題から目をそらさず、チャレンジしてみませんか？
When we look at the global situation today, it is not calming down; rather, it is becoming more and more complex. Unbelievable events seem to happen almost every day, and problems in one region appear to spread to others. In such a world, it is natural to feel uncertain about stepping out into the wider world.
Many people who study English hope for safe, secure, and friendly international exchange. “I want to enjoy learning English while experiencing another culture with a wonderful host family!”—that is certainly an ideal situation. However, don’t questions like these come to mind?
“What is causing the global situation to become unstable?”
“Why do conflicts occur?”
“What kinds of values are clashing with each other?”
The world is made up of many different values. To learn about them, it is important to understand English, the global language, because many countries share information in English. Being able to use English means gaining the ability to understand the world and think about what may happen in the future.
In other words, precisely because the global situation is complex, learning English and developing the skills needed for life is so important. Instead of turning away from these issues, why not face them and take on the challenge?
□ 生成AIの時代の英語学習 Learning English in the Age of Generative AI
英語学習で言えば、2022年に世界が驚く出来事が起こりました。生成AI（ChatGPT）の誕生です。これは本当にショッキングな出来事でした。日本語の文章を瞬く間に英語に翻訳、また、英語が瞬時に正確な日本に翻訳される。文字情報だけでなく、音声で答えてくれる。しかも、機械と英語で会話ができる。最近はさらに進化して、スマートフォンのカメラを向けるだけで、カメラに写る外国語が瞬時に翻訳され、さらに詳しい情報が提供される。まさに夢のような状態です。こうなると「もう英語を勉強する時代は終わった。これからはAIに任せる時代だよ」ということばが真実味をおびてきます。でも、それ本当でしょうか？取扱説明書を理解したり、ホテルのチェックインやちょっとした文書を理解したい場合は、それでこと足ります。ただ、翻訳されたものが正しいと誰が判断できるのでしょうか。しかも、それが重要なビジネスの取引であれば失敗は許されません。私はこう考えます。「単純な作業は生成AIにやってもらい、できたものを修正して自分の目的にあった文書を作成できる高度な英語力が必要になる時代です。」つまり、生成AIの時代だからこそ、高度な英語力が必要なのです。ここを勘違いすると大変な状況に陥ります。
When it comes to learning English, something surprising happened in 2022: the birth of generative AI, such as ChatGPT. It was truly a shocking development. Japanese text can be translated into English instantly, and English can be translated accurately into Japanese in just a moment. AI can respond not only in writing but also by voice. It can even have conversations with us in English.
Recently, this technology has advanced even further. By simply pointing a smartphone camera at foreign-language text, it can be translated instantly, and additional information is provided as well. It feels almost like a dream. In this situation, the idea that “the age of studying English is over—now we can leave everything to AI” starts to sound convincing.
But is that really true? If you just want to understand an instruction manual, check in at a hotel, or read a short document, AI translation may be enough. However, who can judge whether the translation is truly correct? If the situation involves an important business deal, mistakes are not acceptable.
I believe we are entering an age in which simple tasks can be handled by generative AI, but people need advanced English skills to check, revise, and create texts that truly match their own purposes. In other words, precisely because we live in the age of generative AI, high-level English ability is more important than ever. If we misunderstand this point, we may find ourselves in serious trouble.
