国際英語学科を知って頂くためにコラムを始めます。このコラムのトピックは「英語学習」です。今、世界に目を向けると戦争や紛争が続いています。パンデミックによって世界が混乱しました。こうした暗いニュースに毎日触れていると、海外で活躍しようという気持ちが揺らぎ、その結果、英語を勉強するモチベーションも落ちてしまうかもしれません。このコラムでは、10年先を見つめながら、英語学習の大切さ、グローバルに生きることの重要性をゆっくりとお話していきます。日本語の後に英語訳を掲載しますので、英語の勉強になれば幸いです。
To help you get to know the Department of English as a Global Language (EAGL), we are launching a new column. The theme of this column is “English Learning.”
If we look at the world today, we see ongoing wars and conflicts. The pandemic also caused great confusion across the globe. When we are exposed to such troubling news every day, we may begin to feel uncertain about working or being active overseas. As a result, our motivation to study English may also decline.
In this column, we will take a long-term perspective and look ten years into the future. Step by step, we will discuss why learning English is important and why it matters to live and think globally. Each article will first be written in Japanese, followed by an English translation. We hope that reading both versions will also support your English learning. We look forward to sharing these ideas with you.
□ 英和女学校という原点: Our Origins
英語学習を行う場合、「どこで英語を学ぶか」というのが大切です。つまり、大学がどういう英語学習環境を提供しているのかが重要なのです。福岡女学院大学の原点は「英和女学校」です。ご存知でしたか？1885年（明治18年）に米国メソジスト監督教会宣教師であった Jennie Gheer（ジェニー・ギール）によって創立されました。学校の場所は、福岡市の中心地、天神（てんじん）でした。創立当時から「英語」を教えていたのです。その後長い歴史を経て大学が開設され、2014年に「国際キャリア学部」が設置されました。九州・沖縄地区で唯一「女性の国際キャリア」に焦点を当てた学部です。国際英語学科はこの学部に属し、創立以来の「英語教育」を受け継いでいるのです。
When you study English, an important question is “Where will you learn English?” In other words, the learning environment that a university provides for English study truly matters.
The origin of Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University was an “Eiwa Girls’ School.” Did you know that? It was founded in 1885 by Jennie Gheer, a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. The school was located in Tenjin, the center of Fukuoka City. From the very beginning, English was one of the subjects taught at the school.
Over many years, the institution continued to grow, and a university was eventually established. In 2014, the Faculty of International Career Development was launched. This faculty is unique in the Kyushu and Okinawa region in that it focuses on women’s international careers. The Department of English as a Global Language belongs to this faculty and carries on the long tradition of English education that has existed since the school’s founding.
□ 伝統に培われた英語教育: English Education Built on a Longstanding Tradition
本学は1964年に短期大学が、1990年に大学が開設されました。大学が開設されてからまだ35年ですが、英語教育の伝統は1885年以来、140年間培われてきました。日本において最も古い学校の1つなのです。国際英語学科では、できる限り英語を使って授業や指導を行っています。学科内のメールの連絡も英語が使われています。英語の使用を日常化する環境が共有されているのです。つまり、国際英語学科では、「英語を使う」というのが「日常」なのです。コラムの読者が大学を選ぶとき、その大学がどういう学習環境を備えているかということも確認して下さい。それでは、どのような英語教育を行っているのか、また、どのような英語学習が役に立つのかなどについては、これから少しずつお話していきます。次回のコラムを楽しみにして下さい。
At our institution, a junior college was established in 1964, and the university opened in 1990. Although the university itself has a history of only 35 years, the tradition of English education dates back to 1885 and has been cultivated for nearly 140 years. In this sense, it is one of the oldest schools in Japan.
In EAGL, classes and academic guidance are conducted in English as much as possible. Even emails and internal communication within the department are often written in English. This means that students and faculty share an environment in which using English is part of everyday life. In other words, in EAGL, “using English” is not something special—it is simply part of daily routine.
When you choose a university, we encourage you to pay attention to the kind of learning environment it offers. In future columns, we will gradually introduce what kind of English education we provide and what types of English learning are truly useful. Please look forward to the next column.
