【国際交流】After 28 years!

As previously reported in the university website’s “What’s New” section on May 4, 2025, we are pleased to share this news again as part of the Department of English as a Global Language’s international exchange activities.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Ms. Cristiana C. Freed visited our university. Cristiana participated in a cultural exchange program 28 years ago, in 1997, between the then-Junior College Department of English and Mills College (California, USA). Mills College was a prestigious women’s college located in Oakland, California. At the time, she was an exceptionally talented student majoring in arts education and showed a strong interest in education. During her stay, Professor Hosokawa of our department was in charge of her Japanese language classes.

In March, we received a message from her in the United States, informing us that she would be visiting Japan with her family. It turned out to be a wonderful reunion.

After graduating from university, Cristiana pursued a career in education. She later earned a master’s degree from the prestigious Teachers College, Columbia University, and has since been active as a teacher. Her achievements and approach to education are featured in a recorded interview. Please click the “English Interview” button to watch the video.

Cristiana is a graduate of a women’s college. In recent years, some have questioned the necessity of women’s colleges from the perspective of “diversity.” However, it is precisely because we value diversity that women’s colleges continue to have significance. In particular, the gender gap in Japan remains a serious issue on a global scale, and change is urgently needed. Reuniting with Cristiana after 28 years and engaging in various conversations with her reaffirmed the importance of women’s colleges.
