【授業紹介】Dr Doyle's Reading Skills Class 読解力が伸びる！

英語の上達には Reading が必須です。Reading Skills 科目では、様々な読み方を学びます。授業は英語で行われるので、4つのスキルを同時に伸ばすことができます。Dr Doyle の授業をご紹介しましょう。

The aim of this class is to improve student reading skills. Students are introduced to different readings about different topics. Each reading focuses on particular skills associated with reading; for example, skimming, scanning, identifying pronoun references, identifying supporting examples, using transitions. At the end of this course students will be better readers – they will have attained the required skills to understand reading passages quickly and they will have improved reading rates. This combination builds confident readers!

In this class, we read, of course! Students are expected to preview the reading passage before they come to class. This preview is discussed among the students and the teacher leads a group discussion. Usually, we move on to focus on the vocabulary which is needed for the reading. The teacher prepares vocabulary slides which use visuals to help students understand and remember vocabulary meanings. There are lots of questions and answers in this part of the lesson.

This is a great question! The teacher models the reading and students then engage in peer reading. Students help each other and the teacher moves about the classroom listening to individual pairs. In addition, students engage in speed reading. The aim of this exercise is to improve student reading rates. Students focus solely on reading and in this way, are unburdened of the need to comprehend everything, meaning the exercise becomes both fun and challenging! The students enjoy this particular exercise a lot.

Yes, as part of this course students are encouraged to read graded readers every week. Students are registered on M-Reader, a Learning Management System which records the number of words that students read each week. Students have a target number of 210,000 words every semester. So, essentially students are asked to read 2 graded readers per week.

Yes, we do. Take a look at the photo. There are a range of reading passages and exercises to improve reading. This book is CEF B1, which is an intermediate level.

ペアリーディングが多い授業で、英単語や発音の練習をすることができた。生徒間同士のコミュニケーションが多かったため、お互いに分からないところを教えあったり、自分たちの考えを共有したりすることができた。今までスピードを意識して英語を声に出して読むことはあまりなかったが、スピードリーディングを通して、自分の英語を読むスピードを客観視することができた。パワーポイントを利用したゲームも多く、発言する機会が多くあり、楽しみながら英語を学べた。（A.Oさん）
