■ So, tell me a little about Sri Lanka?
I am proud of my land. I am from the land of tea and elephants. The only traffic jams are caused by the herd of cows and elephants crossing the road or so Sri Lankans often say. And we are the also only ones who can make a full meal from three different types of rice.
■ Why did you decide to come to Japan?
My ambition to be an air-hostess and I will take this chance to explain why I want to be an air-hostess. It is because of Sri Lankan Airlines. Their uniform is very beautiful. They call it kandyan, and when I first saw that kandyan I knew what I wanted to be. Also, I am very interested in learning languages. So, in 2020 (After high-school) I decided to go overseas to chase my dream.
I studied three main subjects to the advanced level in my high school. They were English literature, Oriental music-violin and Japanese Language. So, I started to learn Japanese from high school. My parents were very supportive and suggested to me that I go to Japan for my higher education. I have loved “Sakura” from my childhood and I already knew a little bit of Japanese culture from my high school so I chose Japan as my dream country.
■ Is learning Japanese popular in Sri Lanka?
Yes. I think so because now we can select as a subject from our ordinary level and our school organizes many events such as “Japanese culture day “, ”Japanese exhibitions “, ”Japanese food festivals”, “Japanese tea culture”. So, as you can see, there is a lot going on outside of the Japanese language classes. Many Sri Lankan boys also like to go to Japan to study abroad because of Japanese vehicles. So nowadays, many young girls and boys from Sri Lanka select Japan for their higher education.
■ You speak and write English very well, is English used a lot in Sri Lanka?
In Sri Lanka, we must learn English from age 4 -5 in kindergarten. English is like the secret sauce in our curry spicy and is essential. We use it everywhere in schools, on the streets. Privately in my family we chat sometimes in English, especially my sister and I.
■ How do you find living in Fukuoka?
Well I found this University as my friend graduated from Fukuoka Jo Gakuin in 2023. After I selected the university, I researched about Fukuoka from February 2024. After that I came to Fukuoka and I want to thank my friend because she was always with me and helped me a lot.
■ How did you come to study at Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University?
I decided to study at University after Japanese language School in Kyoto. And at that time I searched about University life in Japan on the internet and I got so much information from my language school teachers also. And, of course, my friend told me so much about Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University. I had lived 2 years In Kyoto, so I wanted to live in another city in Japan. My friend who graduated in 2023 from Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University and now works at a good company in Japan spoke highly of her experience at EAGL. So, I decided that I would like to study at EAGL also.
■ What do you hope to do after you graduate from Fukuoka Jo Gakuin?
As I said, my ambition is to be an air hostess. First, my target is to join a smaller Airline and then I want to join Japan Airlines –JAL. It is one of my dream Airlines so I want to get a job with them. And, in the future, I would like to study for my masters also.
■ Do you have any message for high school students who might want to study English at EAGL?
Yes, I highly recommend this University as there are many good professors. They are from England, America, Canada, Ireland and Japan, of course. So, if you start your education with this University, I think it will be one of the best life decisions of your life. And especially, I want to talk about the professors in this university. They privately give their attention to us and make time for us. It is a very good point for us. If you have a dream to get a good Job in Japan or another country my advice is you have to learn English because this is the 21st century and as the world is going with technology, technology is always with English. And we all know English is the International Language, I think it's very important to our future!
