短期大学部イマージョンコースの学生５名が２～３月春季休暇中、英語圏の国・地域に語学留学しました。
今回はHawaiiに留学した、A.M.さんの留学報告を紹介します。
I went to Honolulu, Hawaii to study from February 9th to 23rd. Although it was a short period, I learned a lot of things. It was my first time traveling alone and leaving Japan.
Until I arrived at Hawaii, I was very worried about flying alone and the things to come, but as soon as I met the host family at the airport, I was given a lei (flower necklace) made of real flowers and the greeting for the first time with a hug. At that time, I felt that I was abroad and could definitely enjoy these two weeks.
At school, I was in an intermediate level class. There were many Asian students including several Japanese, and some Europeans. We were not allowed to speak any other languages other than English. So, I spoke with Japanese students in English. At first, I was worried whether I would be able to get along with the classmates, but as I talked with them through the classes, I was able to enjoy the free time. The content of the lesson was mainly Speaking. We formed a group of about three people each and discussed what we thought about the problems that the teacher gave us. Outside of the classroom, like in a corridor, I often talked to people from other classes with similar levels. I felt that it was important to be interested in many things and to give opinions with a solid reason. Unlike classes in Japan, I had the opportunity to talk with various people, and it was a very fresh experience to me.
During the first two weeks in Hawaii, I felt so much that I couldn't explain myself. At first, I was anxious about studying abroad, but when the day to come back to Japan approached me, I loved my host family and thought that if I stayed there, I could improve my English. During this study time abroad, I had a lot of fun and felt that sometimes my English was inadequate, but I was very happy to have the opportunity to have such an experience.
私は2月9日から23日までの約二週間、ハワイのホノルルに語学留学しました。二週間という短い期間でしたがそれ以上に多くのことを感じ、学ぶことができたと思います。
現地に到着するまでは一人での飛行機やこれからのことなどでとても心配していましたが、空港に着き、ホストファミリーと対面するとすぐに本物のお花でできたレイ（花の首飾り）を首にかけもらい、初対面の挨拶がハグで始まるところからハワイに来たという実感が沸き、この二週間は絶対に良いものになると感じました。
語学学校では実力テストを受けた後、私は中間レベルのクラスに入ることになりました。授業内容は主にスピーキングでした。先生が出してくれた問題についてどう思うかをそれぞれ三人くらいのグループを作って話し合ったり、廊下に出て、レベルの近い他のクラスの人たちとインタビューをしあったりしました。そのことから、多くのことに興味をもってなんとなくではなく、しっかりとした理由を持ちながら意見をすることが大切であると感じました。日本での授業と違い、様々な人と接する機会があり、とても新鮮な授業でした。その語学学校の中では、入り口を入ると英語以外の言語を話すことは禁止で、日本人の生徒とも英語で話しました。日本人同士で話すと、考え方や価値観が似ている分、相手が何を言いたいのか大体予想がつくため、すべて英語で正しく言葉に出来なくてもいいと甘えていた部分がありました。しかし、他の国の学生とは正しい英語で話さないと言いたいことが伝わらないし、話し合いも成立しません。私はこの時、コミュニケーションの手段としての英語の大切さを改めて実感しました。私は、母語が英語の方と、母語が日本語の私が英語を使って会話するのはもちろん大切ですが、お互い母語が英語ではない同士で英語という共通言語を勉強してコミュニケーションが取れることの素晴らしさに感動しました。この時感じたことをこれから先もずっと忘れずに英語の学習に取り組んでいこうと思います。
私が初めて一人で海外に行くことになったこのハワイでの二週間で、説明できないくらい多くのことを感じることができました。初めはアクシデントが起こり、不安だった留学でしたが、日本に帰る日が近づいてくると、ホストファミリーのことがさらに大好きになって、このままここにいたらもっと自分の英語力もあがるのかなと考えていました。今回の留学では、楽しいことも、自分の英語力の不十分さを感じることもありましたが、このような経験ができる機会をいただけて、とても幸せでした。
