I went to San Francisco from February 8th for 3 weeks. In February, Covid-19 was starting to have an influence in some countries little by little. This made me really worried about, but I could spend a great time and learn a lot of things. If I had stayed in Japan, I would have never noticed two important things.

The first thing was “age” as a student. Before studying abroad, I thought, “I have to study abroad by the time I graduate from junior college. If I don’t go now, I can never do.” However, I noticed that age does not matter. In school, my classmates varied in ages as well as nationalities. For example, one classmate, who was older than me came to improve his language skills, quitting his job and leaving his wife and children in his country. Another classmate came with friends after raising her children. These totally changed my values. Before going to study abroad, I never thought I could study abroad after raising my children, but now I feel free that I can go to study abroad anytime.

The second was “purpose” for studying abroad. I went to San Francisco because I wanted to speak English better. However, other classmates not only tried to acquire English but also were thinking about their life after they finish their course. For these, they studied hard every day. I never thought ahead like that. I was very inspired by all the other students and their ideas and life planning.

Through this experience, my way of thinking and values totally changed. I gained the ability to think about things regardless of age, gender, and nationality. In addition, I think that the motivation to learn English helps you think about your goals in your life.
