本学では4月24日（金）から遠隔授業が始まりました。新型コロナウイルス（COVID-19）感染拡大を防ぐための方策です。1年生〜4年生までの学生の皆さんは自宅で時間割に沿って同時進行（双方向型遠隔授業）で授業を受講しています。
欧米に比べて遠隔授業が普及していない日本ですが、今後は普及が加速するでしょう。ただ、大切なことは遠隔授業の良さと対面授業の良さを上手く組み合わせることです。遠隔授業で学べることは多くあります。インターネットが普及した現在、多くの情報がネットを通して簡単に手に入るようになりました。しかし、対面授業が得意とする領域もあります。それは学生と教師の対話から学びを掘り下げていくことができるからです。
イギリスのオックスフォード大学やケンブリッジ大学では今でも1対1の個人指導が行われています。これを行うには当然費用と時間がかかります。しかし、こうした個人指導によって学びが深まるのです。日本の大学の通常の対面授業でこうしたことはできませんが、それでも遠隔授業にはない利点でしょう。
さて、この記事を読んでいる皆さんも自宅で不便を感じているかもしれません。しかし、英語の学習についてはインターネットにアクセスすることができれば全てが教材なることに気付いていますか。1990年代のIT革命以来、英語の情報に触れることが日常化しました。パソコンのクリック1つで英語の世界が拡がるのです。YouTube / Podcasts / Internet radios には数え切れない英語の番組が流されています。また、Google Maps の Streetview 機能を使うことで世界を旅することもできます。大切なのは「学ぶ意志」なのです。

Online classes started on 24 April 2020. This aims to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Our students, from freshers to seniors, stay at home and take online classes following their time tables. That is, our online classes are not the on-demand type but the interactive type, which we believe is more effective for learning.
Online education in Japan has not been as pervasive as that in Europe and USA. It will accelerate, i.e. shift to online education, in the near future in Japan too. However, the important point would be how to use effectively both online and in-class interactive education. It is true that online education has a lot of advantages. Enomous information is available on the Internet, and it is very easy to access it. Having said that, in-class interactive education also has a merit in that through interaction with teachers students can deepen their understanding.
Universities such as Oxford and Cambridge in UK have a tutorial (person-to-person) class even today. However, it would take a huge cost as you can imagine. We cannot do the same thing in Japan, but students can still benefit from in-class interactive education. This is a merit missing in online education.
Readers of this article might be stressed by staying at home for a long time. However, if you use the Internet, you can jump into the ocean of English. All you need to do is to swim in the English ocean. Since the IT revolution in the 1990s, accessing English has become part of life. In other words, English world is "just a click away" if you use a computer. You can use YouTube, Podcasts, Internet radio, and by using Streetview of Google Maps, you can travel around the world.
