In addition to introducing students to core English phrases and vocabulary and the know-how needed to survive when living, studying or traveling abroad, the English for Tourism course tries to foster a deep interest in foreign countries and their culture.
Meeting twice a week, we explore the world, region by region, through film, video, books, and the Internet. Students discuss not only themes related to tourism, but also talk about foreign countries, their culture, politics, economies, current affairs, and language.

Every class students must make presentations on countries of their own choosing. In addition we spend a portion of the class time doing text work. Today discussed culture shock and the different stages most people go through when living abroad—namely, the “honeymoon or tourist stage”, the “stress stage”, the “adjustment stage” and finally, the “reentry shock”.

None of the members of the class have experienced this, but all of them seem eager to deal with the challenges of culture shock in the near future.
Good luck!
