How Conversation Works: Pauses, Fillers, Hesitation Devices (会話の仕組み: ポーズ、フィラー、ためらい デバイス)

前回の続きです。ある人の発言が終わった後、次に話す人から2つの異なる反応が返ってくることがよくあります。１つは「期待通りの丁寧な反応（例えば、招待を受ける、要求に従うなど）」、もう１つは「予想外の、丁寧で、あまり一般的でない、またはより『答えにくい』反応（例えば、招待を断る、要求に応じないなど）」です。期待通りの反応は「好ましい(選択された)答え」とも呼ばれ、予想外の反応は「好ましくない(選択肢にない)答え」とも呼ばれます。このような「答えにくい」反応は、多くの場合、次のようなポーズ(沈黙)、フィラー、ためらい デバイス(ええと、というような間をつなぐ言葉、ためらいの言葉)から始まります。

 

Request > Grant     

            A: Could I borrow your car tomorrow?           

            B: Sure.

 

Request > Reject

            A: Could I borrow your car tomorrow?

            B: Well... I dunno ... I don't think so.

 

Compliment > Accept (minimalization)

            A: This cake is delicious. You're a great cook!

            B: Oh, I thought it was a little too sweet.

 

Challenge > Reject

            A: Give up, you're not going to finish it anyway.

            B: Oh, yes I will, I just need a little more time.

 

Assessment > Agreement (upgrade)

            A: Isn't he nice?

            B: Oh, he's fantastic! 

 

Assessment > Disagreement (downgrade)

            A: Isn't he nice?

            B: Well, um, he isn't mean.

 

Apology > Accept (minimalization)

            A: Sorry about last night.

            B: Don't worry about it.

 

Invitation > Accept

            A: Want to go to the beach?

            B: Sure, sounds fun.  

           

Invitation > Decline

            A: Want to go to the beach?

            B: The beach? Well, um... I have a lot of work to do.

 

Invitation > Accept

            A: Why don't you come to Fukujo Junior College?

            B: Great idea! I will!
