2014年以開設された国際キャリア学科（ICD）を卒業した一期生～五期生は現在、航空等運輸、旅行、ホテル、製造、金融・保険、広告、ＩＴ、貿易、官公庁、自治体など様々な業界で活躍しています。
他方で、国内外の大学院に進学してさらに学びを深めようとする卒業生もいます。昨春卒業した四期生のE.Uさん（筑紫女学園高等学校出身）もその一人で、オーストラリアのメルボルン大学大学院（グローバル・メディアコミュニケーション・コース）に合格しました。
入学試験で高く評価されたE.Uさんはメルボルン大学大学院院から奨学金を受け、今月から憧れの海外の名門大学院での学びを始めます。以下は、E.Uさんのメルボルン留学報告の第一弾です。E.Uさんからはこれからもシリーズでメルボルン便りを送っていただく予定です。

Hi, there. It’s Ellie. How’s it going?
皆さん、こんにちは！福岡女学院大学国際キャリア学科四期生の E.Uです。現在は、メルボルン大学大学院の修士課程で Global Media Communication を学んでいます。
まずは、ご存知の方も多いかもしれませんが、メルボルンについて少しだけご紹介したいと思います。メルボルンは、オーストラリアの南に位置するシドニーに次ぐ同国第二の都市です。テニスの全豪オープンやＦ１のオーストラリア・グランプリが行われている街というとわかりやすいかもしれませんね。街の雰囲気としては、一般的にオーストラリアという言葉から連想されるビーチにサーフィンみたいな感じでは全くありません。どちらかというと、とてもヨーロッパ風の街並みです。Foodieな街、Cafeの街、Garden city と様々な別称を持っており、世界で最も住みやすい都市に選ばれた街としても知られています。多様性にあふれた文化が共存していて、毎日、新たな発見があります。個人的には、とても洗礼された素敵な街という印象を持っています。
現在、オーストラリは冬真っ最中で、毎日、凍えています。朝は-２°にもなるほどで、福岡の冬と変わらない、いやむしろメルボルンの方が寒いんじゃないかと思うくらいです。そんな時期に渡豪したのは、Semester 2（７月）からの入学だったからです。コロナ禍の影響で大学を卒業して、ようやく今、新たなスタートに立つことができています。
私が通うメルボルン大学は、1853年に設立されたヴィクトリア州で最古、オーストラリアでも２番目に古い大学です。キャンパスに入ると、なんだかハリー・ポッターの映画の世界に舞い込んだようです。オーストラリアの大学は通常２月から Semester１が始まりますが、私は Semester ２からの入学なので、今月25日から授業が始まりました。その前の１週間はオリエンテーション・ウィークで、Reading やWriting、ResearchingのTips の講義を受けたり、Receptionと言って同じ研究科の学生たちとの交流会みたいなものに参加しました。世界中から様々な経歴を持つ優秀な学生が集まっていることを目の当たりにし、きっとレポートに追われる日々になるのだろうと、これからの大学院生活に不安と緊張がいっぱいですが、そんななかにもワクワクする気持ちもあります。
「新たなことに挑戦するのはいつだって勇気が必要。でもそれさえあれば、きっと世界はぐんっと広がって、新たな世界をみせてくれる。そして、その世界をみせてくれるドアいつだって、勇気を振り絞って出した一歩先にあって、その一歩は遠いようで意外と近い。だから、恐怖や不安とかそんな邪魔なものは一旦横において、それから、みたいかみたくないか？その問いに答える。きっと答えはもうすでに決まっていて、必要なのはひとさじの勇気だけ。それだけなんだから、もったいないことしないで、手に入れるべきだ。」
そういえば、そんなことを学生時代に学んだなと思い返しながら、エンジンがかかりました。
さて、今回から始まったメルボルン便り。少しでも海外留学を目指す後輩の皆さんの楽しみになったり、将来を考えるきっかけやヒントになればいいかなと思っています。ぜひ楽しみにしていてください。

I am a postgraduate student at the University of Melbourne.
First thing first, I would like to tell you about Melbourne a little bit here. Melbourne is the second biggest city in Australia, where the Australian Open Tennis Championship and Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix are held.
When it comes to its atmosphere, if you imagine beaches or surfing there you might feel a bit strange since Melbourne has more like European atmosphere. It is also known as “foodie city”, “cafe city” or “garden city”. In fact, the city has been nominated as one of the most livable cities in the world. If you ask me, I would say this city is very beautiful, sophisticated, and you can always find something new since multiple cultures co-exist in this city.
Australia is in winter now!! It might be a bit hard for you to imagine because you are in the middle of summer. It is so cold and I am always freezing. It might be colder than in Fukuoka in winter. The reason why I came to Australia in this season is that the school starts in July. I can finally stand at the commencement of my new life after one and half year after the graduation.
Melbourne University, which is the second oldest university in Australia and the oldest school in Victoria state, was established in Victoria state in 1853. It has over 160years history. I feel as if I was in Harry Potter movie every time I am on campus.
Most of the students start the semester in February, but I got into the school in July, which is Semester 2. Classes start from 25th July. We have had Orientation Week since 18th July and I attended some lectures such as Reading, Writing and Researching Tips. We also had a reception in which I met other graduate students of my faculty.
I already got some Pre-Lecture videos and am starting preparing for the classes. To be honest, I am overwhelmed that there are so many talented and smart students gathered in this university and I believe that the school life is going to be full of assessments. I am very nervous and anxious, while there are always enormous excitements.
Now I remember what I learnt in Fukujo life.
“The courage is always needed when you challenge something new. But with that, the world will surely much more broaden and wider and show us a new world. And the door that shows the world is always one step ahead of us. The step seems to be far away but it is actually surprisingly close. Then, just answer the question that “Do I want to see it or not?” once you put fear, anxiety, or something that gets in the way next to you. I’m sure the answer has already been decided, and all you need is a scoop of courage. That’s it, so don’t waste it, you should get it !! ”
The message started my engine and made me confident.
