My choice:Yamaguchi University, Graduate School

Students studying in the EAGL Department go on to various fields after graduation, including corporate positions, government roles, English teaching, and graduate studies. Approximately 90% of students find employment in the corporate sector, especially in the service industry. However, there are also students who aspire to become English teachers or pursue advanced studies in graduate school.

We are pleased to announce that Ms S.M., a graduate of Fukuoka Prefectural Chikuzen High School, who had the ambition to pursue graduate studies, has been accepted into the Graduate School of Humanities, Faculty of Humanities, at the National University Corporation Yamaguchi University. Ms S.M. will be enrolled in the Master's program of the Sociology Course, specializing in Folklore and Cultural Anthropology. This achievement reflects a commitment to the department's mission: Think Simple, Think Different, Think EAGL!  Ms S.M. has realized the mission of the department through this accomplishment.

■ Why did you pursue a graduate school?

The decision to pursue graduate studies was sparked during my research in Professor Hosokawa's seminar, where I reexamined "Japanese culture." Up until then, I had been contemplating entering general industries such as the aviation and tourism sectors while obtaining a teaching certificate. However, the curiosity to know more about "culture" became the driving force behind my decision to pursue graduate studies. Additionally, as I was completing the teaching certification program, the goal of obtaining a "specialized certificate" during graduate school further supported my decision.

Considering the potential for new discoveries in a different environment, learning in unexplored fields, and the elements conducive to achieving my goals, I chose Yamaguchi University. I aim to leverage the "English proficiency" I acquired in the EAGL Department at Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University and the "knowledge of culture" gained at Yamaguchi University to contribute to my career and strive for greater heights.

■ How effective was your study in the EAGL?

The learning experience in the EAGL Department has been particularly beneficial due to the dedication to study and research. Moreover, the environment emphasizing "lifelong learning" within the department has enhanced my perseverance. Specifically, obtaining the STEP Test Grade Pre-1 in my second year, along with improvements in English proficiency through tests like TOEIC, provided the confidence that fueled a greater desire for further study, ultimately resulting in success in pursuing advanced studies.

During the entrance exams for graduate school, a foundational knowledge of the chosen field was required. Initially lacking any knowledge in the specialized subjects, I started from scratch, reading introductory books and research papers. The perseverance and confidence in English skills developed in the department were crucial in not giving up and ultimately achieving success in the entrance exams.

■ What's your future plan with a message to prospective students?

My future aspirations revolve around the idea of "working diligently to achieve set goals." While one can betray oneself through laziness, effort will never betray oneself. Even in the absence of immediate results, effort can lead to identifying areas for improvement and guiding towards further paths. I aim to cherish ambition and confidence, sparing no effort, and strive to make my undergraduate and graduate years fulfilling.

To prospective students:

Entering university brings an entirely different, free-spirited lifestyle compared to high school. Moreover, university holds remarkable encounters and discoveries awaiting you. Whether you make the most of them or not depends on you. These encounters and discoveries, wherever they may happen and whatever they may be, can become turning points in your life. Therefore, it is essential to think about how to utilize them and take action. The EAGL Department is fully committed to supporting your dreams and aspirations. You are never alone. Let's work together with full dedication towards our goals.

The EAGL Department is diverse. Approximately 90% of our graduates go on to work in various corporations, but our alumni also excel in roles such as English teachers in junior and senior high schools, instructors for children's English education, and pursuing further education in domestic and international graduate programs. Graduates from our department are making a difference in different places. Whether you're someone aiming to maximize your English proficiency to succeed globally, an individual raised abroad, someone who struggled with English until high school, or someone whose goals are still uncertain, we welcome anyone who resonates with the MISSION of our department. In our small department, the belief that "you can do it if you try" prevails. Think EAGL!
