EAGL Department's MISSION:② Think different

The second of the EAGL Department's missions is "Think different." This became famous through the proposition of Apple's founder, Steve Jobs. Thinking about things from a perspective different from others has always been important in any era. "When you stand with an entirely new perspective, the scenery in front of you changes!" Let's reflect on this concept in this blog.

■ The university as an English community

In the EAGL Department, 231 students participated in the study abroad programs from 2015 to 2023, spanning a period of nine years. This represents nearly half of the total student population in the department. However, what the department values even more is the concept of "the university as an English community." Within the university, there exists an environment for using English, even without going abroad. Here are a few examples:

1. All skill-based subjects related to English are taught in English, and specialized subjects are also taught in English based on students' understanding.

2. Everyday email communication between students and teachers is conducted in English.

3. The "EAGL NEWSLETTER" is regularly digitally distributed to all students in English.

This creates an English-language environment within the university. Shifting from the idea that "you can only learn English by going abroad" to "English can be learned anywhere!" Think different!

■ Think different

In Japanese society, strong individuality is sometimes kept at a distance. The idea of working together with everyone can, at times, lead to conformity pressures. "Think different" starts with respecting each person's thoughts, as everyone holds different values. The EAGL Department values diverse perspectives, supporting a mindset that encourages individuals to express their thoughts freely. The "Seminar" classes (Junior & Senior Seminars) over a two-year period aim to cultivate such abilities. In these seminars, students choose their research topics and present their findings through presentations. Due to the small class size, students gain critical thinking skills through individual guidance from teachers and class discussions.

As a result, by the time of graduation, students can clearly express their thoughts in English. The focus is on questioning and thinking critically without blindly accepting information. These two years provide an opportunity to experience the idea, "When you stand with an entirely new perspective, the scenery in front of you changes." These skills are essential in a society driven by AI and advanced information technology. Think different!
