English proficiency to survive in the AI era: The Department of English as a Global Language

■ Generation Z

Do you know that there are words to represent different generations? The generation born around 1995 to 2010 is called Generation Z. The internet became widely accessible around 1995, shortly after which Amazon and Google were founded, leading people worldwide to start using the internet. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), TikTok, YouTube and others are the most widely used social media platforms. Generation Z grew up while being exposed to these means of information from birth, which means they have a completely different environment compared to previous generations. Since social media has no borders, the ability to use English allows them to access information from around the world as well as share information globally.

■ AI language proficiency

If the 1990s were considered the Internet revolution, then we could say that the 2020s are the era of the AI revolution. OpenAI's ChatGPT, which was unveiled in November last year (2022), left people in awe. It gave the impression of how far AI has evolved. ChatGPT can instantly translate English sentences into Japanese, and vice versa. The quality of its translations is amazing, and it differs from the somewhat laughable translations of not long ago. In the future, natural language interfaces that automatically perform tasks when you speak to them, without the need for keyboard input, will become commonplace. With that, you might hear voices saying, "We don't need to learn English anymore," but is that really the case?

■ Communication is not translation

Just because machine translation is excellent, it doesn't mean that person-to-person communication will disappear. In fact, it may become even more necessary. AI translation is very convenient for those who can't use English. However, people who can speak English can communicate directly with their voice and expressions. Using a translation machine can be nothing but a source of stress when communication is interrupted each time. Also, it's questionable whether AI can always provide the correct answers. What's more important is the acceleration of global communication through AI, and for that, truly advanced English skills are required.

■ The mission of the EAGL

The Department of English as a Global Language (EAGL) assists women in acquiring English proficiency and liberal arts knowledge that enables them to excel on a global scale. We help expand your "present skills" into "ones that are recognized worldwide". In the age of AI, English is more essential than ever. Lately, we often hear the term "diversity." At the same time, we also hear statements like "women's colleges are not needed in the era of diversity." Diversity encompasses a world where coeducation, male schools, and female schools coexist. Homogenization occurs when everything becomes coeducational. The EAGL reevaluates what is considered "common sense." The world is diverse, and we should develop the ability to think from a global perspective. During this process, you will likely also appreciate the value of Japanese culture. AIM HIGH, FLY HIGH! EAGL! We will help to make your dreams come true.
