コロナ禍で昨年は中止、そして今年もどうなることかと危ぶまれましたが、グレープカップコンテスト(英語暗唱大会)！ご案内の運びとなりました！
第48回課題文は、日本でも有名な児童文学作家ドクター・スースの『きみの行く道』です。
この本は、老若男女を問わず、新しい道に踏み出そうとするすべての人にエールを贈る物語です。
卒業式のスピーチにもよく引用されています。

In 2021 Grape Cup Contest we have for the first time in 47 years chosen a piece by famous children's author, Dr. Seuss. Seuss is the middle name of Theodor Seuss Geisel which he began calling himself by as a graduate student of Lincoln College, Oxford. Over his lifetime he was the author of more than 60 books including The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! His books had sold over 600 million copies in 20 languages at the time of his death in 1991. Oh, the Places You'll Go was the last book published in his old age at 86 years old.
Oh, the Places You'll Go is often chosen as a gift for that special someone who has finished one course and is on the road to a new beginning. According to USA Today's Best Selling Book list in both 2017 and 2021 it has reached the number one spot.
Thus the book has inspired many graduation speeches. Dr. Seuss' wise advice tells us that there will ups and downs in each one's journey, calling it "Life's Great Balancing Act." Will hard times slow us down, yes, but will they stop us from completing our journey with success? NO! "And will you succeed? Yes! You will indeed! 98 and ¾ percent guaranteed."
