新型コロナウイルス（COVID-19）感染拡大の影響で私たちの生活スタイルに大きな影響が及んでいます。大学では数回にわたるオリエンテーション・スケジュールの変更、学外からWEBを通したOnline履修登録（在学生）など日々の対応に追われています。いよいよ新入生の皆さんは明日（2020/4/15）からOnline履修登録が始まります。大学及び学科は全力で皆さんを支えます。
平凡な日々がたった1つの新しいウイルスのため突然変わってしまいました。中国から始まり、瞬く間にヨーロッパそして世界全土に感染が拡大しました。多くの感染者がでて、また残念なことに多くの方が亡くなりました。
しかし、私たちはこうした環境変化に負けてはいけません。COVID-19とはどんなウイルスなのか、どのような経路で感染が拡大したのか、なぜ国によって死亡率が異なるのか、各国の医療体制はどうなっているのか、など今回の問題は私たちに「答えのない課題」を与えてくれました。大学で学ぶのはこうした答えのない問題に対峙する「課題解決能力」です。単に怖がったり不平を言っているだけではだめなのです。
そうは言っても誰でも憂鬱になります。ニュースはこの話題で持ちきりで、緊急速報も入ります。こんな状況であるからこそ、私たちは「つながっている」ことが大切なのです。対面で会えなくてもOnlineで繋がることもできます。大学はそうしたツールを皆さんに提供します。授業がどんな形になろうとも、学びましょう。私たちはいつも「工夫」と「学び」で問題を克服してきました。それを忘れずに共に歩みましょう。
さて、受験生の皆さん、学校が休業で思うように勉強が進んでいないかもしれません。本学はできるだけWEBを通して情報発信します。このブログもその1つです。Onlineで皆さんの質問を受け付けられるようなシステムを構築したいと考えています。今の時間を大切にして、基礎に徹した勉強を続けてください。上の写真は通常の授業風景です。国際英語学科は学生の皆さんと教師の距離が近く指導が行き届いています。世界で活躍する姿を想像しながら勉強に取り組んでください。
Hello, students, freshers and prospective students!
As you know, new coronavirus (COVID-19) has greatly affected our lives. The university is no exception. Orientation schedules have been changed several times, and students registered for their classes online from home. Freshers' online registration is to start tomorrow (15 April 2020). The university and the department (EAGL) will do their best to support you.
A new type of virus has changed our ordinary lives. It started in China, but it immediately spread to Europe and around the world. An enormous number of people were infected, and sadly a lot of people died.
However, we should not be overwhelmed by this tragedy. What is COVID-19? How did it spread around the world? Why are the death rates different in each country? What medical systems does each country have? Like these, COVID-19 has given us a lot of "questions with no answers". What you aim to study at university is to develop your "problem-solving abilities". That's why we should not be afraid of or complain about the unknown problems.
Having said that, it is true that we get depressed sometimes. News always talks about COVID-19, and breaking news brings sad stories. Under these circumstances, it is of great importance for us to be "connected" and "stay together". It does not have to be "face-to-face". It can be "online". The university provides you with such tools to connect with each other. Whether it may be online or face-to-face, we can always learn. We have overcome problems with "wisdom" and "learning". Let's not forget this.
Now, prospective (high school) students!
You might be concerned about your study because schools are closed. Please focus on basic studies such as building vocabulary and reading books in English. There are no simple easy ways to reach your goal. The university and the department want to send you messages online. This "Today blog" is one of those tools. The photograph above is one classroom scene. The EAGL department is well-known for its close relationship between teachers and students. We always support you. I do hope that even in this trouble time you have a dream, and move on with the image that you work successfuly at the global stage in the near future!
