以下は１年生を対象とする「Communication Skills」（国際キャリア学科１年生必修科目）を担当しているオーガスト・マッキネス先生（Mr.August McInnis、米国出身)による授業紹介です。

Communication Skills（担当：August McInnis）

I usually take the same approach to most of my speaking skills classes:namely, I try to /maximize/ the opportunities my students have to speak/use English, something the students themselves tell me they need more of.



The first third of the class is spent with students asking each other questions and chatting. I will either provide them with a handout with questions on it or have them come up with questions themselves. These are usually related to the unit we are studying that day, such that if the unit covers the topic of marriage, the questions will revolve around marriage, their feelings towards the institution, their hopes, and so on. Students work in pairs, for intervals of five to ten minutes. With each subsequent partner change, I encourage them to dig deeper and explore more by asking follow-up questions and volunteering more information about hemselves. The idea is to move away from a strict question-answer-next question pattern towards something that resembles a real conversation, that includes natural responses (/Uh-huh. . . Really? No way!/), educed language (/Whaddaya mean? I dunno./),and so on.



Students often tell me that they enjoy this, not only because it enables them to practice speaking right from the get-go, but also because they are able to speak with, and get to know, classmates they otherwise would never talk to. They find common interests, make new friends, and, the overall cohesion within the classroom grows stronger. After this pair work, we will review some of the more interesting questions for a brief group discussion.



Moving on, we have presentations. Each student is expected to make three to four five-minute /mini/-presentations over the course of the semester. These are based on the material covered in the unit of the text we are covering that day. So, again, if we are doing the unit on marriage, their presentations should be related to marriage. Depending on class size, I may divide the students into two or three groups for these esentations, creating a friendly, low-stress atmosphere.

Once we have finished with the presentations, we go onto the text work which is designed for small group discussion. Again, I'll break the class up into smaller groups and have them discuss the day's topic.

Overall, I believe there is much more student-to-student interaction than in a traditional university class, which allows for a much more dynamic (if not noisy, but fun) lesson for the students and teacher.

Communication Skillsの授業では、日常的に使う英語の表現や流暢な話し方について学んでいます。様々なトピックスについて文章をつくって発表をする機会も多く、表現力を高めることができていると感じています。高校まで習ってきたよりも幅広い表現の仕方を学ぶことができたので、この授業で学んだ表現方法や発音の仕方を留学に行った時などに使えるよう、さらに勉強していきたいと思います。

Communication Skills の授業では、よく９０秒間で与えられたテーマについて英語で話します。すぐに単語が出てこなかったりすることもあるので、様々な教材も活用し、復習していこうと思います。

R.Kさん（福岡県立小倉西高等学校出身）

単語と単語を繋げて発音する練習では、今まで区切って発音していたので初めは少し難しく感じましたが、次第に早く話せるようになりました。また、あるトピックについてクラスで発表する練習では初めのうちは自分の考えをどう英語で表現したらいいのか分からない時もありましたが、回数を重ねるうちに分かるようになりました。

授業開始後、ランダムにグループを作り、最近の出来事を３分間で英語で話したり、先生が提示されたテーマに関して黒板に関連するワードを順番に書いたりと、授業時間の全てが座学ではないので、９０分、楽しく授業を受けることができています。また、３週間に一度、グループでのプレゼンテーションの時間があるので、自分の考えを英語で発表することに慣れてきました。高校まででは経験することができなかったようなこの授業を通して、短期間で成長することができていると感じています。

Communication Skillsの授業を通して、よりネイティブに近い発音方法を学ぶことができ、発音がしやすくなるとともに英語を話す楽しさを知ることができました。短いセンテンスのプレゼンテーションを通して英作文とそれを伝える力もつけることができたと思います。これらの学んだことを英語を使える場面で積極的に活用していこうと思っています。

私は、この授業でのプレゼンテーションが一番、力になっていると感じています。テーマは決まっていますが、自分の意見を素直に英語で書くため、自分の言葉で英語を使えるようになれると思います。英語を使ってプレゼンテーションをすることで、英語の読み方の練習にもなっています。ほかの人のプレゼンテーションを聞く時はリスニングの練習にもなるため、様々な力を身につけることができる授業です。
