お招きした外部講師の先生方の最後は、国連人間居住計画(ハビタット) の人間居住専門官であるベルナード・バートゥ先生(ドイツ・ハイデルベルグ出身)から、国連ハビタット福岡本部の活動や国連のインターンシップ・プログラムのご紹介、そして将来、国際機関でのキャリアを目指す際のアドバイスなど、すべて英語でご講義いただきました。新入生たちは懸命にメモを取りながら、お話を聞いていました。以下はバートゥ先生によるご講義の要旨です。On April 7th the Department of International Career Development (ICD) held the orientation to the freshmen at Luigans Spa & Resort, Fukuoka. This year is ICD’s third year, and 102 new students including 6 foreign students joined this department. Students who choose to come to this department have high awareness of becoming globally active career women in the future.
During the orientation, one of the guest speakers, Mr. Bernhard Barth, Human Settlements Officer of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT) – Fukuoka gave the students an introduction to the United Nations and UN-HABITAT. He also briefly explained the work at the Fukuoka Office and listed some advice for those who wish to work for the UN in the future.
As Mr. Barth explained, there are four HABITAT regional offices in the world: Regional Office for Asia & the Pacific (Fukuoka), Regional Office for the Arab States (Cairo), Headquarters/ Regional Office for Africa (Nairobi), and Regional Office for Latin America & Caribbean (Rio de Janeiro). United Nations General Assembly has 17 sustainable development goals to change the world. Among which no. 11, to contribute to human settlements is one of the major tasks for the Fukuoka Office. The Fukuoka Office was founded in August, 1997, and it has been dedicating to various human settlement issues such as urban safety, climate change, water and sanitation, housing and slum upgrading, reconstruction, empowerment of women.
In order to have a career with the UN, Mr. Barth advised the students the following three prerequisites. First, English proficiency and other languages such as French, Chinese, Arabic is requested. Apart from language proficiency especially English, technical skills and soft skills are also necessary. As languages provide a guarantee for successful communication, technical skills equip a person with profession. In the end, to work for the UN is not a straight path, as Mr. Barth pointed out. To have various experiences at different locations will enrich your background, and by relearning from time to time will keep yourself benefitted and upgrade your career.
